The implementation of the NYS Learning Standards for World Languages was purposely designed to be gradual, with a two-year pre-implementation period, then a gradual implementation process divided into three phrases:

• Phase I:Ìý Raising Awareness and Building Capacity (2021-August 2023) - Roll-out and building awareness of the revised standards and timeline for implementation; professional learning opportunities to prepare schools to transition to the revised standards
• Phase II:Ìý Gradual Implementation and Building Capacity (September 2023 – August 2028) - Focus on professional learning, resource acquisition, curriculum alignment, and assessment alignment
• Phase III:Ìý Full Implementation and Sustainability (September 2028 and on) - All K-12 World Language courses will be aligned with NYS Learning Standards for World Languages

Districts with secondary (middle and high school) world language programs may implement the revised NYS Learning Standards for World Languages (2021)Ìýas early as they would like,Ìýhowever, all districtsÌýmustÌýimplement these revised standards by no later than indicated by the following schedule:

Districts with elementary world language programs will implement he revised standards starting with the first year world language is offered as of SeptemberÌý 2023.Ìý In each subsequent year, the revised standards will be implemented (course curricula andÌýinstruction aligned to the revised standards) in the next grade level in which world languages is offered, and so forth, and so on, until the revisedÌýstandards are implemented in all grade levels K-12 no later than September 1, 2028.
