Certification

College Supervised Practicum

For classroom teaching titles, this is a structured, college-supervised learning experience in which the student teacher applies previously studied theory through direct classroom experiences with individual students or with groups of students. These skills are practiced under the direct supervision of the certified teacher who has official responsibility for the students. It is always listed as a formal part of a teacher certification program and as a course in a college catalog. It is verified complete with an official transcript showing a satisfactory grade.

Speech Practicum

This consists of supervised, on-campus clinical practica and off-campus, college-supervised clinical practica totaling at least 150 clock hours that include experiences with students with speech and language disabilities in early childhood, childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence. The off-campus practica shall include experiences in elementary and/or secondary schools.

One year of paid, satisfactory, full-time experience as a speech and language disabilities teacher may be accepted in lieu of the college-supervised practicum. Please note that when such experience takes place at a New York State public school, the candidate must hold a valid Supplementary certificate. For other employers, such as nonpublic schools or schools located outside of New York, the candidate is not required to hold a valid speech and language disabilities certificate.

New York State public schools, BOCES, and charter schools located in New York must verify the full year of experience by entering an electronic Superintendent Statement (entitled 鈥淧aid Teaching Exp. For Initial鈥) onto the applicant鈥檚 TEACH account. All other employers may submit the Verification of Paid Teaching Experience for Initial Certification form.

The following experiences are unacceptable:

  • Practica completed solely for the purpose of a New York State speech license.
  • Practica that are less than 150 clock hours or that do not take place in all the necessary settings.
  • Practica NOT identified in the college's catalog as satisfying the practica requirement for teacher certification.
  • Paid experience not in accordance with regulation, e.g., working without a certificate in a setting that requires one.
  • Experience working with children for medically related aspects of speech, i.e. experience that is not linked to an ISFP (Individualized Family Service Plan) or IEP (Individualized 秘密研究所 Plan) is not acceptable.
Literacy

Literacy (All Grades) Certificate

For the Literacy (All Grades) certificate, candidates must complete a college-supervised practicum of at least 50 clock hours in teaching literacy to students in the pre-kindergarten through grade 4 grade band and in the grades 5-12 grade band.

Literacy (Birth-Grade 6) and Literacy (Grades 5-12) Certificates

For the Literacy (Birth-Grade 6) certificate, candidates must complete a college-supervised practicum of at least 50 clock hours in teaching literacy to students at both the middle childhood and adolescent levels.

For individuals who apply for both certificates, at least 25 clock hours at each developmental level (Birth-Grade 6 and Grades 5-12) is required.

The following table shows the "lower level" grade band and "upper level" grade band that the practicum must include for the indicated literacy certificate.

The following practicum/experiences are not acceptable for the practicum/experience requirement:

  • A practicum that is completed at the undergraduate level.
  • A practicum that is completed as part of a literacy graduate degree program that does not lead to teaching certification.
  • A practicum that does not meet the 50-clock-hour and grade-band requirements.

Teaching Experience in the Lieu of the College-Supervised Practicum

One year of paid, satisfactory, full-time experience as a literacy (remedial reading) teacher at the elementary and/or secondary level may be accepted in lieu of the college-supervised practicum. Please note that when such experience takes place at a New York State public school, the candidate must hold a valid Supplementary, Initial, or Professional Literacy certificate covering the grades they are teaching. For other employers, such as nonpublic schools or schools located outside of New York, the candidate is not required to hold a valid Literacy certificate.

Library Media Specialist

For the Library Media Specialist certificate, candidates must complete a college-supervised practicum providing library services of at least 40 school days, or its equivalent, in an elementary and/or secondary school under the supervision of a certified library media specialist.

One year of paid, satisfactory, full-time experience as a library media specialist may be accepted in lieu of the college-supervised practicum. Please note that when such experience takes place at a New York State public school, the candidate听must听hold a valid Supplementary certificate. For other employers, such as nonpublic schools or schools located outside New York, the candidate is not required to hold a valid speech and language disabilities certificate.

  • A practicum in a public library that is not part of an approved library media specialist program.
  • A practicum that is less than 40 days or does not take place in an elementary and/or secondary school.
  • Paid library media specialist experiences that are not described on the Experience webpage.
