Teaching Assistant

Teaching Assistant Level III Certificate

Valid for life (unless revoked for cause by NYSED)

If you have never held a New York State Teaching Assistant Certificate, you must start by pursuing the Initial TA Certificate.

  • EXCEPTION:ÌýIf you have at least one year of teaching experience in New York as a classroom teacher under a NYS classroom teaching certificate, you may proceed to Level III Teaching Assistant.

Requirements

In addition to the requirements for the Level I, you must have:

  • College coursework -Ìý18Ìýsemester hours
    • Note:ÌýLife Experience Credit (also known as life credit) is not acceptable for certification purposes, regardless of the policy of an individual college/university.
  • Verified Experience as a Teaching Assistant, or Classroom Teacher - 1 Year
    • Experience must be completed in New York underÌýany valid TA certificateÌý(e.g., - Level I/II/III; Initial; Initial TA Renewal; Temporary; Continuing; Emergency COVID-19)
    • Verification of paid experience must be submitted directly by the employer(s). NYS public schools, BOCES and NYS charter schools must submit verifications by entering an electronic Superintendent Statement ("TA Professional 3 Yr. Exp.") onto your TEACH account. All other employers may use this form: Verification Form for Teaching Assistant Applications
    • Please note that this requirement can also be met with classroom teaching experience completed in NY under aÌývalid NYS classroom teaching certificate. NYS public schools, BOCES and NYS charter schools must submit verifications by entering an electronic Superintendent Statement ("Classroom Teaching Experience") onto your TEACH account. All other employers may use this form: Verification Form for Teachers
  • Citizenship Status - INS Permanent Residence or U.S. Citizenship

Registration and Continuing Teacher and Leader ÃØÃÜÑо¿Ëù (CTLE) Requirements

Educators who hold a TA Level III Certificate must register with the Department every five years. Information about registration and continuing teacher and leader education (CTLE) requirements is available here.
